September 2013: Instore Magazine - Holiday Fast Risers
By Chris Burslem & Eileen McClelland | Published in the September 2013 issue
Racking up double-digit gains from a low base set during the meanest recession in living memory is one thing. Doing it in an economy that has stabilized is another altogether. Here, eight stores tell how they engineered huge improvements in sales last holiday season. In some cases, their better performances were driven by something minor like a website adjustment. in others it was the result of an all-out marketing blitz. In every occasion, though, the owners also focused on getting the day-to-day things right, like ensuring gift cards reached the hands of their best customers, perfecting checkout procedure, and making those phone calls. Yep — it's about working hard and working smart. Hopefully, these stories will give you inspiration to get though the tough slog ahead.
The Christmas decorations had yet to be taken down, staff had barely got their breath back from the 2011 holiday rush, but Ann Foley-Collins' thoughts were firmly on the year ahead. The just-finished year had been OK for Glee Gifts, but with more preparation, she was confident a much better result was within her team's grasp.
"I told my staff that Jan. 1, 2012, we are practicing every day for the next 11 months to do our best in all areas to increase sales. I said practice so if there were hiccups from January to November, we would be better prepared to handle them during our busy Christmas season. That meant better staffing, better product, better customer service, better merchandising." Read More >>>

The Gifted Retailer: Glee Gifts
Ann Foley-Collins, owner of Glee Gifts in Mansfield, MA, says that a good retailer should look at their store as a business investment and not a lifestyle business.
Gifts and Decorative Accessories: What do you like best about being a retailer?
Ann Foley-Collins: There are so many things about being a retailer that I enjoy. I don't know where to begin! What I like best is hard to pinpoint. For me, there have been "bests" throughout the seven years of owning my store. In the beginning it was getting to know my customers, what product to sell, and merchandising my store. Then the recession hit, and it was a rollercoaster. I was thrilled that I actually survived that time period when many small retailers like myself were closing their doors. I worked really hard, but it was very satisfying to me and I proved to myself that I could persevere. In 2012 I said to my staff that this year will be the make it or break it year for the business and we made it! At this point in the business what I like best is thinking strategically and implementing plans to grow my brand, margins, profitability, developing myself and my staff.
GDA: What was the most valuable piece of business advice that you ever received?
AFC: It was that most people want to see you fail. Makes me a little paranoid, but it keeps me humble. Read More >>>
